About American Expat Tax Services

About American Expat Tax Services

AET is a specialized U.S. expat tax firm — exclusively focused on complex cross-border tax for Americans living abroad, U.S. taxpayers with foreign accounts and assets, and Canadians navigating obligations on both sides of the border. AET joined the Greenback family of companies in 2025.
Our history

AET was founded in 2013 by Mary Beth Lougen, EA, USTCP, a dual U.S./Canadian citizen with firsthand experience navigating two tax systems. Over twelve years she built AET into a recognized firm for complex cross-border situations: PFICs, expatriation, treaty questions, audits, and IRS resolution.

Since 2025 Mary Beth serves as an advisor to AET, continuing her work as COO of Expat Tax Tools and as a lecturer on international tax and USTCP exam preparation. AET is now led by Mike Wallace, CEO of Greenback Expat Tax Services.

Frequently asked questions

U.S. and Canadian cross-border tax — exclusively. We handle federal and state returns for Americans abroad, Canadian T1 returns for cross-border filers, and complex situations involving PFICs, foreign corporations, streamlined compliance, and IRS and CRA resolution. If your tax life crosses the U.S.-Canada border, we handle both sides.

Our team includes Enrolled Agents (EA), Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Juris Doctors (JD), and U.S. Tax Court Practitioners (USTCP) — one of the most specialized designations in U.S. tax practice, held by fewer than 300 practitioners nationwide.

Yes, AET joined the Greenback family of companies in 2025. AET operates independently as a specialized expat tax firm with its own dedicated team. Greenback’s infrastructure supports operations, but the AET focus and team remain distinct.

Yes — Canadian T1 returns are a core part of what we do, not an add-on. We prepare Canadian returns for cross-border filers, Americans living in Canada, and Canadians with U.S. obligations. If you have filing requirements on both sides of the border, we handle both in a single coordinated engagement.
