Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Cross-Border Tax Specialist possessing a deep combined knowledge of both U.S. and Canadian tax structures. In this role, you will manage dual-compliance requirements for U.S. citizens living in Canada (and vice versa), snowbirds, dual citizens, and cross-border investors. You will act as the primary advisor ensuring clients minimize double taxation, comply with reporting laws in both countries, and effectively leverage the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty.
Key Responsibilities
- Dual-Jurisdiction Preparation: Concurrently prepare complex U.S. federal individual tax returns (Form 1040, Form 1040-NR) and Canadian Personal Income Tax Returns (T1), ensuring multi-currency data matches accurately across both files.
- Foreign Asset & Entity Disclosures: Handle complex international disclosure requirements on both sides of the border, including U.S. reporting for Canadian structures (Forms 8621 for Canadian mutual funds/PFICs, Form 3520/3520-A for TFSAs/RESPs, Form 5471 for CCPCs) and Canadian foreign property reporting (Form T1135).
- Treaty Interpretation: Apply provisions of the Canada-U.S. Income Tax Treaty to optimize foreign tax credits (IRS Form 1116), utilize treaty exemptions, and advise on cross-border retirement accounts (RRSPs, RRIFs, 401ks, and IRAs).
- Compliance Initiatives: Guide clients through delinquent filing remediation processes, balancing the IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures alongside Canadian Voluntary Disclosures if necessary.
- Client Consulting: Deliver strategic advisory sessions regarding cross-border corporate structures, estate planning, and residency transitions (such as Canadian departure tax implications).
Qualifications & Requirements
- Professional Credentials: Must hold an active U.S. or Canadian professional accounting designation—U.S. CPA, Canadian CPA, or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential. Holding dual designations is highly advantageous.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of dedicated tax experience with a direct focus on individual and corporate U.S./Canada cross-border tax compliance.
- Software Competency: Practical proficiency with cross-border tax applications (e.g., CCH ProSystem fx, ProConnect, TaxCycle, Profile, Taxprep, or DT Max).
- Analytical Mindset: Exceptional technical research skills with the ability to interpret simultaneous shifts in both IRS and CRA tax codes.
- Communication: Highly articulate in English (bilingual French is a plus), with an ability to simplify dense, multi-jurisdictional tax law into practical advice for remote clients.
Who we’re looking for
We work with credentialed tax professionals, Enrolled Agents, CPAs, JDs, and U.S. Tax Court Practitioners, who have hands-on experience with expat or cross-border tax matters. We value precision, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to communicate complex situations clearly to clients.
If you don’t have expat tax experience but have strong technical foundations and want to build that specialization, we’re open to that conversation too.
Why AET
Expat tax isn’t a side practice here — it’s everything we do. You’ll work on the full range of cross-border complexity: PFICs, foreign trusts, Canadian T1 returns, compliance programs, entity structures, and more. If you want to build deep expertise in a technically demanding niche, this is the right environment.
Every person on our team works closely with the others, and the quality of our work depends on that collaboration. We take peer review seriously — every return is reviewed before it goes out.
With our clients and with our team. We aren’t built around high turnover. When we bring someone on, we’re thinking about the long term.
Our team works from wherever they are. Like our clients, we’re spread across time zones — and we’ve built our processes around that from the start.
